Matthew S. Washington is Vice President & Chief of Staff of Phipps Houses – New York City’s oldest and largest nonprofit developer of affordable housing. He is responsible for overseeing all public affairs, focusing on pursuing opportunities to create more affordable housing. Prior to joining Phipps, Matthew served as Deputy Manhattan Borough President for Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. He oversaw all funding allocations for the office and served on numerous boards. He was selected for the 2018 New York City 40 Under 40 Rising Stars list published by City & State New York. He previously worked at The Durst Organization, New York Water Taxi, Friends of the High School for Environmental Studies and Friends of Hudson River Park.
Matthew has also served as a member of Manhattan Community Board 11 for over 10 years and was chair of the board for nearly six years as New York City’s youngest community board chair.
Today, Matthew is a member of the board of directors of Waterfront Alliance, the Trust for Governors Island, Randall’s Island Park Alliance and Green City Force. Matthew is also a trustee at Alfred University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in comparative cultures.
